Tigermed is the absolute leader in China's clinical CRO market (per Frost & Sullivan, a 10.6% share of China's clinical outsourcing market in 2024, ranked No. 1; ~1.1% globally, the only Chinese clinical CRO in the global top ten). The bottom of the operating downcycle has confirmed a reversal: net new orders of RMB 10.16 billion in 2025 (+20.7%), backlog of RMB 18.20 billion at period-end (+15.3%), book-to-bill of ~1.49x; revenue for the first three quarters of 2026 up +15.2%, non-IFRS/non-recurring-adjusted net profit up +38.1% (Q3 alone +49.6%), and contract liabilities up +33.1% vs. the start of the year. Industry supply-side consolidation (the number of filed clinical CROs down 69% from the 2021 peak) and the funding-mix shift driven by innovative-drug BD out-licensing (upfront license-out payments of USD 7.0 billion in 2025, +70.7%) jointly support the durability of the order upcycle.
However, the price has moved ahead of fundamentals: the current price of RMB 49.67 implies a market cap of ~RMB 42.59 billion; after deducting the investment portfolio (book value RMB 14.32 billion, at a 75% monetization haircut) and net cash, the implied core-business valuation is ~RMB 30.5 billion. Backing this out, the market is demanding that non-recurring-adjusted net profit recover to RMB 1.22-1.53 billion in 2027-28 (83%-104% of the 2023 peak of RMB 1.477 billion) and that the adjusted margin recover from the current 7.8% to 12%-14% — i.e., the market has essentially priced in the full base-case success path of "order conversion + gross margin recovery + operating leverage." Base-case fair value is RMB 33.5-46, with the current price at a ~25% premium to the base-case midpoint; even applying a 25-30x recovery-period multiple in sensitivity analysis lifts the fair range to RMB 40-51, and the current price still sits at the top of that range. Conclusion: high quality, genuine direction, expensive price — buying at the current level earns excess-execution returns rather than mispricing returns. We maintain a Watch rating and recommend reassessing entry upon a pullback into the base-case range (below RMB 46). Key constraints: fair-value fluctuations of the ~RMB 14.3 billion investment portfolio dominate the headline P&L (a -RMB 597 million loss in the first three quarters of 2026 drove a headline net loss of RMB 272 million attributable to shareholders); two governance events — regulatory penalties against the controlling shareholders for disclosure violations and the suspension of Frontage Holdings; and geopolitical overhang from overseas revenue accounting for 46% of the total.
The opportunity in one sentence: The recovery of the core business has been validated by first-hand data, but the current price carries an ~18% premium to the probability-weighted fair value (~RMB 40.8) and a ~25% premium to the base-case midpoint — the deployable opportunity over the next 12 months lies in entering after a pullback into the base-case range, or in waiting for the Frontage offer proposal and 2026 annual-report order/gross-margin verification to confirm a more optimistic scenario — not in chasing the current price. Evidence grade B (order and financial data thoroughly verified from primary sources, but the latest absolute order figures remain at 2025 annual-report levels and the Frontage proposal has not yet been announced).
Market environment: China's innovative-drug fundraising and BD out-licensing are in an upcycle (global biopharma funding of USD 26.76 billion in 2026H1, +58.5%; BD upfront payments have replaced primary-market financing as Biotech's No. 1 source of R&D funding). The clinical CRO industry has entered a "recovery and steady growth" phase since 2025 (Frost & Sullivan: 2025-2028 CAGR >12%) — a tailwind.
Key changes underway: ① After two consecutive years of declining average unit prices for new domestic clinical operation orders, pricing returned to growth in 2026H1; transmission to gross margins takes 2-4 quarters (2026H1 clinical technical services segment gross margin of 21.1%, improved sequentially vs. 20.09% for full-year 2025 but still down YoY); ② the RMB 18.2 billion backlog is entering an intensive conversion period, with 2026E adjusted net profit of ~RMB 580-650 million (+63% to +83%) and 2027E of ~RMB 850 million-1.05 billion; ③ controlling subsidiary Frontage Holdings (01521.HK) has been suspended since 2026-10-22 under Hong Kong's Takeovers Code, with an offer/privatization proposal pending disclosure.
Primary share-price drivers (ranked by importance): ① The slope of transmission from order volume/pricing → revenue → adjusted margin (gross-margin recovery is the linchpin of recovery pricing); ② the direction of fair-value swings in the ~RMB 14.3 billion investment portfolio (dominates the headline P&L; single-quarter swings of ±RMB 600 million); ③ overseas orders and geopolitical policy (59 active North America projects in 2026H1, +45%).
Expectation gap (vs. sell-side consensus): Consensus (n=9, 2026-10-30) FY2026 EPS of RMB 0.60 / FY2027 EPS of RMB 1.50, already revised down -52.8% over the past 90 days; ratings: 15 Buy / 9 Overweight / 0 Sell. Target-price extremes: Citi A-shares at RMB 67 (2026-09-15), Goldman Sachs A-shares at RMB 75.2 (2026-05-04) vs. Daiwa H-shares at HKD 44 ≈ RMB 37.3 (2026-07-09). This report's expectation gap is negative: FY2026 consensus implies attributable net profit of ~RMB 510 million, which would require a single-quarter Q4 portfolio reversal of ~RMB 800 million (attributable net profit was already -RMB 272 million for the first three quarters); post-Q3 downward revisions are not yet complete. This report's base-case fair value is below all sell-side target prices; the points of divergence are the exit multiple (20-25x here vs. an implied 25-35x among sell-side) and the portfolio haircut (75% here vs. essentially book value among sell-side).
Verification catalysts: Frontage resumption with offer proposal disclosure (2026-11 to 2027-01); 2026 annual report verification of the three order metrics (2027-03); the US OMB "Biotechnology Company of Concern" list (before 2026-12); completion of buybacks and cancellation (from 2026-11). Falsification conditions: 2026 annual net new order growth <10% or a decline in backlog; clinical technical services gross margin still <22% in 2027H1; a single-quarter fair-value loss again reaching ≥RMB 300 million.
The volume-side evidence chain is complete: orders (leading 6-9 months) → contract liabilities (+33.1%) → revenue (+15.2%) → adjusted profit (+38.1%), transmitting stage by stage — the direction is genuine. But two limitations must be flagged: first, the absolute order figures stop at the 2025 annual report (as of 2025-12-31); in 2026 there has been only the qualitative statement of "accelerated growth," and the Q3 report disclosed no order data — the latest volume side can only be corroborated indirectly via contract liabilities and revenue. Second, "net new" is measured as "newly signed minus canceled," which in periods of elevated order cancellations simultaneously inflates book-to-bill and masks contract attrition (the 2025 annual report itself noted cancellations and proactive terminations of domestic innovative-drug orders). If the 2026 annual net new order growth falls below 10% or the domestic clinical operations sub-segment contracts, this thesis is falsified.
Real-world constraints on the recovery: it takes 2-4 quarters for unit-price recovery to transmit to gross margins on executing orders, and the backlog of low-priced legacy orders runs on execution cycles of 12-24 months; headcount expansion (up to 11,984 in 2026H1) and annual AI investment of RMB 300-400 million (management accordingly cut its 2026 net profit guidance from RMB 600-700 million to RMB 500-600 million, as relayed by Daiwa on 2026-07-09) come ahead of revenue. The upward-revision factor is the extremely low 2025Q4 standalone adjusted profit base of just RMB 29 million — quarterly adjusted profit in Q1-Q3 2026 rose sequentially at RMB 120/158/172 million; Q4 only needs to hold flat sequentially for a full-year total of ~RMB 620 million. Hence this report sets 2026E adjusted profit at RMB 580-650 million (implying Q4 standalone of RMB 130-200 million) and 2027E at RMB 850 million-1.05 billion (adjusted margin 10%-11.5%). If clinical technical services gross margin remains below 22% in 2027H1, the recovery slope is falsified.
Two line items must be distinguished: fair-value changes (the RMB 9.698 billion portfolio, whose Q3 standalone loss had already narrowed to ~-RMB 137 million) and equity-method income on long-term equity investments (RMB 4.625 billion book value, not fair-value measured); their drag mechanisms on the headline P&L differ. The abnormal swings in minority-interest profit/loss (-RMB 83 million in 2025; +RMB 148 million in the first three quarters of 2026) further show that the allocation of fair-value gains/losses between the parent and minority shareholders distorts the attributable-to-parent figure. Valuation implication: applying a 75% monetization haircut, the asset layer (portfolio RMB 10.76 billion + net cash RMB 1.32 billion - full goodwill pressure of RMB 3.46 billion) is worth ~RMB 10 per share; adding EPV of ~RMB 10.4 per share, the two floors total ~RMB 20.4, covering ~41% of the current price — nearly 80% of the current price is a bet on the delivery of "orders → revenue → adjusted-margin recovery." This is a normal structure for a cyclical-bottom recovery stock and does not automatically imply overvaluation, but it means downside protection is limited.
The current price demands: adjusted profit of RMB 1.1-1.3 billion in 2028 (base case) or even RMB 1.45-1.6 billion (bull case), with the adjusted margin recovering from 7.8% to 11%-14%. The order math (net new orders RMB 10.16 billion, book-to-bill 1.49) makes this path achievable but with no slack. Sensitivity must be presented honestly: applying a 25-30x recovery-period multiple to the core business (referencing Pharmaron's 45x and the implied range of this round's sell-side consensus) lifts the fair range to ~RMB 40-51, with the current price at the top of the range (-19.3% vs. the floor, +3.2% vs. the ceiling) — the "overvalued" conclusion is sensitive to multiple assumptions, hence it is set as mild overvaluation rather than significant overvaluation. Caveat on basis: the ~89x adjusted PE(TTM) is a rear-view measure of trough earnings with limited reference value; the comparable bases are ~45x 2027E adjusted profit and ~33x 2027E consensus attributable profit. The PB of 2.16x (24th percentile of 5 years) "cheapness" is an illusion of trough earnings — 73% of the numerator's attributable net assets consist of the investment portfolio and goodwill, not high-return operating assets.
Item-by-item assessment: the controlling-shareholder penalties are a personal disclosure violation, on the order of RMB 1 million, with the investigation concluded, no delisting or ST trigger; the October 2026 restricted-share incentive was granted as normal — limited direct operational impact, but the fact that the violation took nearly 7 years to be disclosed is a long-standing disclosure-obligation blemish, with a low-probability tail risk of civil claims or escalated sanctions. The Frontage suspension is a two-way event — if Tigermed launches a cash-offer privatization (requiring ~RMB 1.3-1.6 billion at a 20-35% premium to the suspended price), it would eliminate minority-interest leakage and the HK-listing platform costs, a positive; if terms are unfavorable or talks collapse, Tigermed's ~HKD 1.96 billion market value of the Frontage stake would shrink upon Frontage's resumption repricing. On FX, the company has established a foreign-exchange derivatives trading management regime but has not yet actually hedged; the foreign-currency translation difference was -RMB 137 million in the first three quarters of 2026. On the US front, neither Tigermed nor Frontage is on the 1260H list (the 2026-06-08 update added WuXi AppTec, among others), but the OMB's BCC list, due by December 2026, and the COINS outbound-investment rules remain overhanging variables. The 35.3% H-share discount mainly reflects A+H liquidity and investor-structure differences; the governance events are marginal amplifiers, not the sole attribution.

Notes: ① The sharp drop in cash + trading financial assets from 2023→2024 was due to reallocation into large-denomination certificates of deposit, entrusted wealth management products, and other items, plus repayment of RMB 3.88 billion in borrowings—not an operating cash outflow; total cash-like assets as of 2026-09-30 were approximately RMB 3.54 billion (cash RMB 2.103 billion + trading assets RMB 0.015 billion + large CDs RMB 0.194 billion + non-current assets mostly wealth management products RMB 1.231 billion), plus an investment portfolio of RMB 9.698 billion in other non-current financial assets and RMB 4.625 billion in long-term equity investments. ② The 2023 gross margin is on an overall basis (38.58% estimated via the cost-of-sales method), which differs from the core business basis used from 2024 onward; trends are comparable, but absolute figures are for reference only.
9M revenue was RMB 5.792 billion (+15.23%), with Q3 alone at RMB 2.084 billion (+17.38%)—the fastest single-quarter growth since 2023; recurring net profit of RMB 450 million (+38.08%) has already exceeded full-year 2025 (RMB 355 million), with Q3 at RMB 172 million (+49.62%), rising sequentially for three consecutive quarters; net profit attributable to parent was RMB -272 million (vs +RMB 1.020 billion in the prior-year period), with the loss entirely caused by fair value changes of RMB -597 million and investment income of -93.34%—a coexistence of core business recovery and reported loss, a typical quarter for the "CRO + investment" dual-engine report. Order-side absolute figures were not disclosed in the Q3 report, but contract liabilities +33.10% and accelerating Q3 revenue cross-confirm the H1 qualitative disclosure of "accelerating net new order growth and pricing returning to growth." Balance sheet: the three abnormal changes—contract liabilities, treasury stock (+274.74%), and long-term borrowings (+178.88%)—jointly point to a combination of "order recovery + escalated buybacks." Versus market expectations: before the Q3 disclosure, sell-side consensus for FY2026 attributable net profit was ~RMB 510 million, implying Q4 attributable profit of +RMB 780 million (requiring essentially a full fair-value recovery of the investment portfolio)—with no fundamental basis; consensus has yet to price in the Q3 report, and further downward revisions are likely. This report's FY2026 attributable net profit range is RMB -300 million to +200 million, with recurring profit at RMB 580-650 million; Q4 direction depends on portfolio fair value rather than the core business.
Business model in brief: An asset-light, labor-intensive clinical CRO (11,130 employees globally at end-2025, covering 42 countries); revenue is order-based project income (Phase I-IV clinical trial operations, SMO, biostatistics, regulatory, imaging, central labs), with no subscription-type recurring revenue; overlaid by a biotech equity/fund investment portfolio of ~RMB 14.3 billion (a "CRO services for equity co-investment" model), making the reported results a "services + investment" dual-engine structure. Weak pricing power, still in early recovery: domestic clinical operation unit prices declined continuously through 2023-2025, stabilized in 2025, and resumed growth in 2026H1, but this has not yet flowed through to gross margin.
Cash content of earnings: This is the most solid part of Tigermed's financials—OCF/recurring net profit: 0.78 in 2023, 1.28 in 2024, 3.15 in 2025 (denominator at trough recurring profit), 1.71 in 2026 9M; OCF absolute amount stable at ~RMB 1.1 billion (11.50/10.97/11.18 billion... RMB 1.150/1.097/1.118 billion), FCF (OCF−CapEx) for 2023-2025 was RMB 837/740/904 million, and 2025 CapEx of RMB 214 million was below depreciation of RMB 369 million (0.58x), entering a capacity digestion phase. Book attributable profit and true cash generation have long diverged: attributable net profit was RMB 405 million in 2024, RMB 888 million in 2025, and RMB -272 million in 2026 9M, while FCF remained at RMB 700-900 million throughout—fair value swings of the investment portfolio in the attributable profit are noise; OCF/FCF is the true cash flow of this business.
Recurring earnings decomposition: Of 2025 attributable net profit of RMB 888 million, non-recurring items were +RMB 533 million (disposals of financial assets + fair value + wealth management income), leaving core recurring profit at only RMB 355 million; 2026 9M is the reverse: non-recurring items of RMB -722 million masked the recurring recovery of RMB 450 million into a loss. Minority interest swings at the ±RMB 100 million level (RMB -83 million in 2025, +RMB 148 million in 2026 9M), with the allocation of fair value gains/losses between parent and minority shareholders further distorting the attributable figure.
Return on capital: Overall ROIC ~3.1% (2025, NOPAT ÷ total invested capital), well below the 8% warning line—but mainly because the ~RMB 14.3 billion low-turnover investment portfolio dilutes the denominator; the CRO core business's capital return is significantly higher (asset-light, net cash, OCF/recurring >1); the company does not disclose segment-level capital returns, so precise decomposition is impossible. ROE (attributable basis) was ~4.29% in 2025, at a historical low.
CapEx quality: 2024 CapEx was RMB 357 million (laboratory capacity expansion phase, CapEx/depreciation 0.98), contracting to RMB 214 million in 2025 (0.58x)—under an asset-light model, CapEx intensity is naturally low; the split between maintenance and growth CapEx is undisclosed (maintenance investment cannot be determined), but in aggregate it is not a cash drain.
Red flags and moat: Red flags—three consecutive years of recurring profit declines (direction of earnings quality), book profit dominated by the investment portfolio (transparency), three consecutive years of declining per-capita output (efficiency); positives—OCF and FCF stable at ~RMB 1 billion scale over ten years, growth in customer advance payments (contract liabilities), market share gains for the leader after industry consolidation. The moat is detailed in the industry landscape chapter below.
Consistency of words and deeds: pragmatic and verifiable. ① The 2025 annual report pledged "average unit price of newly signed orders has stabilized, expected to return to growth in 2026" → delivered in 2026H1 ("average unit price has returned to growth versus the same period of 2025"); ② the 2025 annual report expected "gradual improvement in domestic innovative drug clinical operation business" → delivered with 2026H1 clinical trial technical services revenue +20.68%; ③ the long-standing commitment "annual cash distribution exceeding 30% of the year's recurring net profit" → 2023/2024 dividends of RMB 491 million (33.3%)/RMB 257 million (30.0%) just met the threshold; in 2025, cash dividends shrank to RMB 108 million, supplemented by RMB 309 million in buybacks to meet the "deemed dividend" definition (combined, 46.9% of attributable profit)—formally delivered, but cash dividends declined for three consecutive years (491→257→108 million RMB).
Shareholder friendliness: neutral to friendly. Cumulative buybacks of RMB 1.371 billion from 2018-2024; the 2026 plan of RMB 500 million to 1 billion has seen RMB 824 million executed (transaction range RMB 38.22-42.78, ~14%-23% below current price); consecutive buyback share cancellations in 2025/2026 (365.52 million... 3.6552 million shares cancelled on 2026-10-21, with another 5.8838 million shares in process); no A-share refinancing dilution in the past 5 years; 2026 restricted stock incentive plan to bind the core team. Deductions: in 2026, borrowing RMB 1.424 billion in long-term debt to fund buybacks—leveraging up to return capital carries a cost at elevated share prices; the H-share proceeds use was changed a second time in August 2026 (acquisition budget cut from HKD 1.476 billion to HKD 200 million, remainder redirected to debt repayment and working capital), clearly scaling back global M&A ambitions—indirectly confirming prudence on overseas expansion.
Risk signals: Controlling shareholder Ye Xiaoping (20.58% stake) and Cao Xiaochun (5.96%) were fined RMB 1 million for disclosure violations, recorded in the integrity archives (see C5 for details); Cao Xiaochun pledged 18.5 million shares (~36% of her holding) and sold 347,600 shares in November 2025 (average price RMB 60.78)—the controlling shareholder has real funding needs and a selling history, a counter-variable to the buyback-support signal.
| Segment | 2025 Revenue Share | 2025 Gross Margin (YoY) | 2025 Revenue YoY | 2026H1 | One-line Business Logic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clinical trial technical services | 47.81% | 20.09% (-9.47pct) | +2.79% | RMB 1.773 billion, +20.68%; GM 21.1% | Labor-driven clinical operations/regulatory/biostatistics; recovering after domestic price declines hit hard; incremental overseas and MNC orders |
| Clinical trial related services and laboratory services | 50.44% | 32.64% (-4.20pct) | +4.57% | ~RMB 1.844 billion, ~+7.9% (est.); GM 31.9% | SMO (4,000+ CRCs) / imaging (Micron) / central labs (Frontage, Guanhe), supported by MNC orders but diluted by consolidation |
| Other businesses | 1.75% | Not separately disclosed | -7.41% | Small scale | — |
| Of which: overseas revenue | 45.77% (RMB 3.128 billion) | 29.78% (core business basis) | +2.37% (FX headwind) | H1 overseas +3.15% vs domestic +24.04% | 59 active projects in North America (+45%), 48 MRCTs; RMB appreciation suppressing translation |
Profit driver estimate: Approximating gross profit contribution via "revenue share × gross margin"—related services and laboratory segment contributes ~50.4% × 32.64% ≈ 16.5 gross profit points, clinical trial technical services ~47.8% × 20.09% ≈ 9.6 gross profit points: the bulk of gross profit comes from "related services and laboratory," not from clinical technical services despite the latter's larger revenue share; the latter is both the main cause of the 2024-2025 gross margin slump and the source of recovery elasticity. The 12.6pct gross margin gap between segments (32.64% vs 20.09%) stems from structural business differences: SMO/biostatistics/labs are more standardized services with capacity reuse, while clinical technical services are labor-intensive with unit prices suppressed by domestic competition—the key 2026 watchpoint is whether price recovery can lift the technical services segment's gross margin back above 25%.
Accounting red flags: ① Profit dominated by non-recurring items (severity: high)—swings of ±RMB 500 million, 60% of 2025 attributable profit, RMB -722 million in 2026 9M; ② excessively high share of fair-value-measured assets and pro-cyclical (high)—portfolio of RMB 14.32 billion is 51.2% of total assets, with no disclosed synergy to the CRO core business, and volatility directly hits attributable profit; ③ minority interest serving as a profit allocation buffer (medium)—allocation of fair value gains/losses between parent/minority shareholders distorts the attributable figure; ④ goodwill growth mismatched with impairment provisions (medium)—goodwill rose RMB 756 million over two years to RMB 3.520 billion (RMB 3.457 billion at end-2026Q3), with only RMB 20.28 million provisioned in 2025 (provision rate <0.6%); slower-than-expected recovery of Frontage's US business poses potential impairment pressure (Frontage main CGU recoverable amount RMB 3.092 billion, safety margin 44%; Micron CGU only 23.8%); ⑤ large swings in effective tax rate (low)—19.8% → 32.6%, due to tax treatment of non-recurring items and overseas tax differentials.
Cross-period consistency: ① Recurring profit declined three years straight, 14.77→8.55→3.55 billion... RMB 1.477→0.855→0.355 billion—management attribution consistent across the three periods (industry cycle, price declines, order cancellations), self-consistent with the fact of price recovery in 2026H1, consistent; ② core business gross margin 38.6%→33.27%→26.53%→26.6%—attribution chain coherent (price declines → order cancellations → stabilization), consistent; ③ per-capita output declining continuously, RMB 761K→648K→614K—company only explained the reasons for headcount expansion (SMO demand + M&A consolidation), failed to directly address the decline in per-capita efficiency—a gap in management's narrative; ④ minority interest direction flip—mechanism explanation is self-consistent but highlights portfolio dominance, consistent; ⑤ operating receivables surged RMB 1.017 billion in 2024 (a revenue-declining year) → narrowed to RMB 200 million in 2025—collection quality deteriorated then recovered; management's "focus on collecting service fees" narrative is consistent with cash flow data. Overall judgment: no signs of systematic accounting manipulation; the core issue is "real investment portfolio volatility" rather than "fabricated profit smoothing"—but the seasonal pattern of concentrating fair value losses in Q4 (2025Q4 attributable profit of RMB -133 million) warrants continued monitoring.
Current market data and multiple percentiles (price anchor: 2026-10-30 close of RMB 49.67, market cap RMB 42.59 billion): PE(TTM) is negative (attributable TTM net loss of RMB -404 million, percentile meaningless); static PE of 47.8x (66th percentile over the past 5 years; 2025 attributable profit includes +RMB 533 million in non-recurring items, distorting the figure); PB of 2.16x (24th percentile over 5 years, 12th percentile over 10 years) is the most credible anchor during this earnings-distorted period, but 73% of the denominator consists of the investment portfolio and goodwill, limiting comparability; PS(TTM) of 5.59x. Important caveat: current profit is at a cyclical trough and distorted by the investment portfolio, so PE percentiles are mechanically misleading — for reference only, not to be used as a headline cheap/expensive signal — the effective metrics are ex-non-recurring and forward: ex-non-recurring PE(TTM) of ~89x (a rear-view view of the trough), 2026E ex-non-recurring ~69x, 2027E ex-non-recurring ~45x, 2027E consensus attributable ~33x.
Peer benchmarking (as of 2026-10-30): WuXi AppTec market cap ~RMB 431.0 billion, ex-non-recurring PE(TTM) ~21.3x, PB 4.45, 9M26 revenue +38.6% / ex-non-recurring +73% (divested clinical CRO in 2025, shifting from direct competition with Tigermed to complementary positioning); Pharmaron market cap ~RMB 76.0 billion, ex-non-recurring PE(TTM) ~45.1x, PB 4.52, 9M26 revenue +19% (its clinical segment posted 2025 revenue of RMB 1.96 billion with a gross margin of only 11.4%, roughly one-third of Tigermed's scale); IQVIA (global No.1 in clinical CRO share) FY2025 revenue of USD 16.31 billion (+5.9%), 2026 guidance implying ~17-19x (to be verified); ICON is mired in an accounting restatement affair, its distressed multiple not used as an anchor. Tigermed's valuation sits above the global mature anchor (17-21x) and below A-share peers in recovery mode (Pharmaron at 45x) — in between the two.
What the market has already priced in: market cap decomposition — RMB 42.59 billion − portfolio RMB 14.32 billion × 75% realization discount (RMB 10.76 billion) − net cash RMB 1.32 billion = core business of ~RMB 30.5 billion. Back-solving at 20-25x, the current price requires 2027-28 ex-non-recurring profit of RMB 1.22-1.53 billion (83%-104% of the 2023 peak) and an ex-non-recurring margin recovering from 7.8% to 12%-14%. In one sentence: the current price demands the company triple ex-non-recurring profit within two years and reclaim peak earnings, while reality points to 2026E of ~RMB 580-650 million and 2027E of ~RMB 850 million-1.05 billion — order math (net new orders of RMB 10.16 billion, book-to-bill of 1.49, conversion lag of 2-4 quarters) makes RMB 1.1-1.3 billion achievable in 2028, but expectations are high and the margin for failure is thin: buying at the current price implicitly assumes full delivery of the base case.
Three-tier value (EPV): asset tier ~RMB 10.0/share (portfolio realized at 75% for RMB 10.76 billion + net cash RMB 1.32 billion − full goodwill of RMB 3.46 billion); EPV (equity basis) = normalized core-business FCFE of ~RMB 0.99/share ÷ 9.5% cost of equity ≈ RMB 10.4/share (range RMB 8.6-12.3) — normalization basis: using 2025 OCF of RMB 1.118 billion and 9M26 ex-non-recurring profit of RMB 450 million as realized base, excluding portfolio fair-value changes, with an ex-non-recurring margin set at a sustainable midpoint of ~11% (lower end of the pre-pandemic normal range); bridge (+D&A of ~RMB 400 million − maintenance CapEx of ~RMB 300 million − working capital increase of ~RMB 150 million) yields core-business FCFE of ~RMB 850 million/year; D&A/maintenance CapEx are estimates (the company does not disclose the split). Current price structure: EPV accounts for ~21%, growth/recovery option ~79% — a high option share for a cyclical-bottom recovery stock does not automatically mean overvaluation (EPV-with-zero-growth is inherently conservative); the verdict must rest on the scenario distribution, but with nearly 80% of weight riding on recovery delivery, downside protection is limited. Adding the asset-tier floor, the two tiers combined cover ~41% of the current price.
Three scenarios and odds (12-month horizon, price anchor RMB 49.67):
| Scenario | Probability | Fair value range (RMB) | vs. current price | Core assumptions and swing factors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | 22% | 20 - 26 (midpoint 23.0) | -53.7% (to midpoint) | Order recovery stalls (book-to-bill ≤1.1, a second dip in financing triggering renewed order cancellations), 2028 ex-non-recurring only RMB 800-870 million × 15x + further 30% portfolio impairment (realization value ~RMB 6.0 billion) + net cash RMB 1.32 billion ≈ RMB 20.4 billion |
| Base | 50% | 33.5 - 46 (midpoint 39.75) | -20.0% (to midpoint) | Backlog of RMB 18.2 billion converting over 6-9 months: 2027 revenue RMB 8.6-9.1 billion, 2028 ex-non-recurring RMB 1.1-1.3 billion (margin 11%-12%); exit at 20-25x + portfolio book value of RMB 15.2 billion × 80% + net cash, discounted 2 years at 9.5% |
| Bull | 28% | 51 - 62.5 (midpoint 56.75) | +14.3% (to midpoint) | MNC PoC volume ramp in China + overseas revenue share >50% + AI-driven cost savings delivered: 2028 ex-non-recurring RMB 1.45-1.6 billion (reclaiming the 2023 peak) × 26-30x + portfolio recovering to 85% of book value |
Probability-weighted fair value is ~RMB 40.8, about 17.8% below the current price; the current price sits just above the upper bound of the base-case range and within the bull range — the market is pricing "base-plus," and the odds are asymmetrically skewed to the downside. Bear-case anchor check: the most bearish external sell-side number is Daiwa's 2026-07-09 H-share target of HKD 44 ≈ RMB 37.3 (and that was a target for an upgrade to Buy), about 43% above this report's bear-case upper bound — Daiwa's figure is an H-share rating target (under a 35% H/A discount, not directly comparable), not a stress test; this report's RMB 20-26 range is an independent stress assumption (order stagnation + further portfolio impairment + 15x exit), by nature a stress floor. We neither adopt the sell-side floor as the bear-case boundary nor adjust to accommodate sell-side views. The bull-case upper bound of RMB 62.5 remains below Citi's RMB 67 (2026-09-15) and Goldman Sachs' RMB 75.2 (2026-05-04); we do not chase the most optimistic external anchors.
Exit multiple anchoring rationale and sensitivity: the base-case 20-25x is anchored to global mature peers (IQVIA guidance 17-19x, WuXi AppTec ex-non-recurring TTM 21.3x) and the lower end of the company's own 5-year median static PE of 32.6x — not Pharmaron-style 45x, which reflects recovery-period sentiment premium, and whose clinical segment's earnings quality is weaker than Tigermed's (gross margin 11.4%); the global 17-21x is the terminal gravity. Sensitivity must be presented honestly: at 25-30x (A-share recovery-period basis, the range implied by this round's sell-side consensus), the fair value range rises to ~RMB 40-51 (-19.3% ~ +3.2% vs. current price), with the current price at the upper end — the "modestly overvalued" judgment is sensitive to multiple assumptions; this is the main fragility of this valuation conclusion and the reason confidence is set at 0.60.
Our earnings forecasts vs. guidance vs. consensus (anchor for next earnings reconciliation):
| Period | Revenue | Attributable net profit | Ex-non-recurring net profit | Basis notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY2026E (this report) | RMB 7.74-7.92 billion (+12.7%~+15.4%) | RMB -0.3 ~ +0.2 billion | RMB 580-650 million (+63%~+83%) | Q4 revenue RMB 1.95-2.13 billion (+8%~+18%); attributable profit depends on Q4 portfolio fair-value direction |
| FY2026 management guidance | Double-digit revenue growth | Net profit RMB 500-600 million (per Daiwa's 2026-07 relay, cut from RMB 600-700 million due to AI investment) | — | Meeting the net profit guidance requires Q4 portfolio reversal; this report is more conservative |
| FY2026 consensus | — | ~RMB 510 million (EPS RMB 0.60) | — | Implies Q4 attributable profit of +RMB 780 million; Q3 results not yet digested, downward revision incomplete |
| FY2027E (this report) | RMB 8.6-9.1 billion (+11%~+15%) | RMB 900 million-1.4 billion (including portfolio fair value assumption of 0~+300 million) | RMB 850 million-1.05 billion (margin 10%-11.5%) | Concentrated order conversion + overseas share 48-50% + gross margin 29%-31% |
| FY2027 consensus | — | ~RMB 1.29 billion (EPS RMB 1.50) | — | Falls in the upper half of this report's range; requires margin recovery to exceed the base case |
Conclusion: modestly overvalued; target price range RMB 33.5-46 (base-case fair value), margin of safety -33%. Separate quality from price: the company is the absolute leader in China's clinical CRO space, the order inflection is real, and cash flow is solid — worth long-term tracking; but the current price already pays full freight for the base-case recovery, so buying here earns money on execution beating expectations, not on mispricing. Strategically, RMB 46 (base-case upper bound) is the dividing line: above it, stay on the sidelines; if the price falls back into the RMB 33.5-46 range without fundamental deterioration, evaluate staged entry.
Industry Size: Clinical CRO is the largest single segment in the CXO value chain. The global market is approximately USD 73.20 billion in 2026, projected to reach USD 98.98 billion by 2030 (2026-2030 CAGR of about 7.8%, Frost & Sullivan basis, as cited by Cinda Securities); the China market was RMB 44.24 billion in 2023, projected at RMB 95.56 billion by 2030 (2024-2030 CAGR of about 13%), with 2025-2028 CAGR expected to exceed 12% and exceed RMB 75 billion by 2028. Clinical CRO accounts for about half of China's overall CXO market (RMB 95.56 billion / 185.49 billion in 2030). Industry rhythm: 2017-2019 growth phase → 2020-2022 high prosperity (double-digit growth) → 2023-2024 correction (single-digit growth, price wars, Biotech funding winter) → early recovery and upturn confirmed from 2025. On a global basis, growth over the past five years has been about 5%-7% per year; China's growth is about 1.6-1.9x the global rate.
Structural Changes on the Demand Side — BD Outbound Deals Reshaping Funding Sources: The fundamental difference between this round of demand recovery and the previous one (driven by primary-market financing in 2020-2021) is the shift in funding sources for Chinese Biotech R&D: in 2025, domestic innovative drug primary-market financing was USD 14.684 billion (+127%, PharmaCube), while license-out BD upfront payments reached USD 7.0 billion (+70.7%), with 158 deals (+61.2%) and potential total value of USD 135.7 billion (+160%) — BD upfront payments have surpassed primary-market financing to become the top source of R&D funding; in 2026H1, total outbound licensing was approximately USD 99.7 billion (about 2x the full year 2024), with upfront payments of USD 5.0 billion, and potential total value exceeded USD 120 billion (+36%) in the first three quarters. Pipeline reserves: of 14,088 innovative drugs in development globally, 4,751 were originally developed by Chinese companies (33.7%, ranking first globally), of which 76% are at early stages — meaning the Phase I-III clinical trial pipeline will continue to expand over the next 2-4 years. Execution-side validation: in 2025, 2,703 domestic IND approvals (+19%), 1,168 Phase I trial starts (+13%), 671 Phase II (+42%), and 77 approved Class 1 new drugs (48 in 2024).
Value Chain and Value Distribution: Upstream consists of clinical institution/investigator resources (Tigermed partners with 1,400+ domestic clinical trial institutions, 300 key partner centers + 98 green-channel institutions + 8 jointly built centers), subject recruitment, and CRA/CRC/biostatistics talent — institutional qualifications and beds are scarce resources, and CROs have weak bargaining power over hospitals, with leaders locking in resources through jointly built centers; the midstream is Tigermed's segment (integrated clinical operations, SMO, biostatistics, regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance, imaging, central lab); downstream is MNCs (25%-30% of China's Phase III trials by volume), large domestic pharma companies, and Biotechs (funding reliant on financing + BD upfront payments). Peer evidence of value retention: Pharmaron's clinical research services gross margin was only 11.4% (2025), significantly below its lab services at 44.7% — the clinical segment is labor-intensive within the CXO chain with lower gross margins, and Tigermed retains relatively higher value through scale and integration; its bargaining power over cash-strapped small and mid-sized Biotechs has risen (can proactively terminate orders with collection difficulties), and is roughly balanced with MNCs.
Supply-Demand and Competitive Landscape: Supply-side shakeout is the key to this round's improvement — according to National Health Commission human genetic resources filings, the number of clinical CRO companies has fallen 69% from the 2021 peak, with only 6 new entrants in 2025 (18 in 2024); 480 registered CROs are undertaking 20,602 trials in development, averaging 42.9 per firm (+20.6%), still below the US figure of 54.1, with rising concentration among leaders. Landmark event: WuXi AppTec sold Kangde Hongyi + Jinshi Pharmaceutical to Hillhouse in 2025 for RMB 2.8 billion (2024 clinical CRO/SMO revenue of RMB 1.63 billion), fully exiting the clinical track — Tigermed moved from "competing alongside the WuXi family" to "the sole absolute domestic leader in clinical CRO." Competitive intensity: the domestic price war was brutal in 2023-2024, easing from 2025; Tigermed's domestic new-contract ASP stabilized in 2025 and rebounded in 2026H1; Pharmaron clinical new contracts +30% in 2026H1 and NovaSignal Q3 +24.5% corroborate an industry-wide recovery. The high-end MRCT/FSP market is still dominated by foreign players such as IQVIA, ICON, and Parexel. Concentration: CR1 = Tigermed 10.6% (2024, Frost & Sullivan "China clinical outsourcing services" revenue basis; another basis shows 12.8% in 2023, Cinda Securities — the discrepancy stems from statistical year and outsourcing scope definitions), with shares of ranks 2-8 all in single digits; precise CR3/CR5 not obtained; Tigermed's global share is about 1.1%, the only Chinese clinical CRO in the global top ten. Entry barriers: clinical institution networks and GCP track record (since 2004, Tigermed has served 61% of China's approved Class 1 new drugs, with cumulative experience on 164 MRCTs), compliance quality and regulatory inspection records, biostatistics/regulatory talent pools, customer switching costs — asset-light but with strong talent and track-record barriers; WuXi's sale of its clinical business indirectly confirms this segment is hard to integrate with other platforms.
Cycle and Regulation: Cycle position — peaked in 2021-2022 → downturn and bottoming in 2023-2024 → early recovery upturn confirmed in 2025; revenue lags orders by 2-4 quarters, and profit recovery lags revenue by another 2-4 quarters (Tigermed's 2025 revenue grew only +3.48% as it was executing low-priced orders signed during the downturn, with non-IFRS adjusted profit still -58%, while orders were already +20.7% — this time-lag structure is the main thread for interpreting current fundamentals). Leading indicators: Biotech financing (global +58.5% in 2026H1), IND approvals (+19%), early trial starts (Phase II +42%), leaders' new orders (Tigermed +20.7%; WuXi backlog RMB 66.43 billion in 2026H1, +25.2%), new-contract ASP (Tigermed rebounding in 2026H1). The regulatory environment is overall neutral-to-positive: Domestic — NMPA proposes 30-working-day review for qualifying innovative drug INDs (consultation draft 2025-06), NHSA + NHC "Measures to Support High-Quality Development of Innovative Drugs" (2025-07), first commercial insurance innovative drug list implemented, "Regulations on Clinical Research and Clinical Translation Application of Biomedical New Technologies" effective 2026-05-01; Overseas — the BIOSECURE Act was signed into law on 2025-12-18 with the FY2026 NDAA (naming BGI/WuXi family, Tigermed not listed), the US DoD added WuXi AppTec to the Section 1260H list on 2026-06-08 (legal challenge filed), Treasury's proposed COINS rules (2026-10-22) would bring biotech under inbound investment review — on the legislative clock, OMB must publish the "Biotechnology Company of Concern" (BCC) list by December 2026, with the ban expected to take effect in 2027; final COINS terms pending. Transmission assessment: Tigermed is not listed and MNC clinical trials in China are irreplaceable (China patient enrollment is 2-5x faster than the global average, Phase I oncology trials 8.7 months vs. 17.5 months in the US, and in 2025 Chinese clinical data replicated in US trials for the first time), so direct impact is limited; but if COINS compresses the supply of dollar capital to Chinese biotechs, it will transmit indirectly through the dual channel of "Tigermed investment portfolio valuations + client financing."

Company Industry Positioning: Leader + rising share. Tigermed has ranked first in China clinical outsourcing share for consecutive years (10.6% in 2024, Frost & Sullivan; 12.8% in 2023, Cinda — both bases shown for verification), 1.1% globally and the only Chinese clinical CRO in the global top ten; net new order growth (+20.7%) outpaces the industry CAGR (about 12-13%), and with WuXi exiting the clinical track and industry shakeout, its share trend is rising. Four layers of moat: hospital network (partnerships with 1,400+ institutions + 4,000 CRCs, one of the largest SMO operations in China), project track record (service history on 61% of approved Class 1 new drugs + 164 MRCTs), biostatistics and regulatory compliance capabilities (970+ biostatistics talent, dual FDA/NMPA experience + the Taiya AI platform), and international footprint (11,130 staff across 42 countries, overseas revenue at 46%, North America in-flight projects +45%). Share-basis caveat: the company's self-reported figures and third-party estimates (Frost & Sullivan vs. Cinda's citation) differ at 10.6%/12.8% due to differing statistical years and definitions of "outsourcing services"; both point to the No.1 position but with differing magnitudes.
CXO is an order-driven business; standard financial frameworks miss three decisive indicators, which are listed separately here.
Backlog and Net New Business: Tigermed's year-end backlog grew from RMB 14.08 billion (2023) → 15.78 billion (2024) → 18.20 billion (2025, +15.3%), with backlog/annual revenue at about 2.7x — converted at the current revenue pace, this is a pool of signed but unexecuted revenue of about 2.5-3 years, the hardest leading indicator of future revenue; net new orders (new signings minus cancellations) rose from 8.42 → 10.16 billion (+20.7%), with book-to-bill (net new/revenue) at 1.28 → 1.49x, significantly above 1, indicating the order pool is still expanding. Basis caveat: net new is a netted figure; in periods of frequent order cancellations (2024-2025) it simultaneously inflates book-to-bill and masks contract attrition; in 2026 the company has only qualitatively disclosed "accelerating growth" without absolute figures — the latest volume data awaits the 2026 annual report (2027-03) for verification. If net new growth falls below 10% (below roughly RMB 11 billion) or the domestic clinical operations sub-segment contracts, that constitutes this framework's falsification signal.
Order Conversion Lag and Revenue Recognition Rhythm: Management states the order conversion cycle is 6-9 months (per Daiwa), and clinical trial execution cycles run 12-24 months with percentage-of-completion revenue recognition — low-priced orders signed in 2024-2025 will gradually clear from the 2026-2027 statements, while new orders at rebounded unit prices from 2026H1 onward enter the peak recognition period from 2027. This determines the three-stage timeline of "order inflection (2025Q1-Q4) → revenue inflection (2026Q1-Q3, +15.2%) → profit inflection (2026 adjusted +38%, accelerating in 2027)," and also that the slope of gross margin and adjusted margin repair in 2027 is the biggest operational suspense of this cycle.
Per-Capita Output and Capacity Utilization: A CRO's capacity is its people and institutional network. Tigermed's revenue per capita fell three years in a row: RMB 761,200 (2023) → 648,300 (2024) → 613,900 (2025), with headcount expanding from 9,701 → 10,185 → 11,130 ahead of revenue recovery (rising to 11,984 in 2026H1, domestic staff +8.7% vs. revenue +14.1% over the same period, with per-capita output marginally stabilizing and rebounding); the recovery in utilization of the SMO segment's 4,000+ CRCs and 970+ biostatistics professionals is the micro foundation of gross margin repair. Peer reference: Pharmaron's clinical segment gross margin of 11.4% is significantly below Tigermed's overall 26.5%, showing Tigermed's scale and integration still retain an efficiency advantage on the order of 15 percentage points in labor-intensive segments.
The Financing Cycle Is the Master Valve: Biotech financing → pipeline advancement → IND/clinical starts → CRO orders, with a transmission chain of about 2-4 quarters. Current valve opening: global biopharma financing of USD 26.76 billion in 2026H1 (+58.5%), China primary market USD 5.81 billion (+79.1%), BD upfront payments having replaced financing as the top funding source — this round's structural demand support is stronger than the purely liquidity-driven 2020-2021, but if quarterly BD total/upfront values cool by more than 40% sequentially, or COINS final rules compress dollar capital supply, order expectations will be systematically revised down — this is the framework's No.1 external risk.
Overall Assessment: Neutral (Hold/Watch), confidence 0.58, time horizon 12 months. Tigermed's fundamental story holds — absolute leader in China clinical CRO, order inflection confirmed, adjusted profit entering a repair channel from 2026, and decade-scale stable OCF and FCF; but the current price of RMB 49.67 has essentially priced in the baseline recovery path (2028 adjusted profit of RMB 1.1-1.3 billion, adjusted margin back to 11%-12%). Probability-weighted fair value is about RMB 40.8, roughly 18% below the current price; odds skew downward (-20.0% to baseline midpoint, -53.7% to bear case midpoint, +14.3% to bull case midpoint). Separating quality from price: this is a company worth putting on the watchlist, but not a buy at the current price.
Strategy: Use the baseline fair value range of RMB 33.5-46 as the operational reference — the current price (RMB 49.67) is above it; maintain a watch stance. If the share price falls back into the range and order/gross margin verification has not deteriorated (especially clinical technical services gross margin above 25% in 2027H1), the odds for staged entry turn favorable; if fundamentals verification exceeds expectations (net new orders ≥ RMB 12 billion, adjusted margin repaired ahead of schedule), re-rate under the bull scenario rather than chasing the price.
Risk and Catalyst Reminders (presented uniformly here; see monitoring list for details): Upside — Fangda Holdings offer plan disclosure (2026-11~2027-01), verification of the three order line items in the 2026 annual report (2027-03), BCC list confirming Tigermed's absence (before 2026-12), buyback completion and cancellation accretion (from 2026-11), commercialization of the AI platform; Downside — order growth falling below 10%, clinical technical services gross margin stuck below 22%, investment portfolio quarterly loss exceeding RMB 300 million again, controlling shareholder re-involved in violations or civil claims, Tigermed/Fangda added to US restricted lists, sustained RMB appreciation. Two special reminders: first, FY2026 net profit attributable to shareholders is almost entirely determined by investment portfolio fair value (Q3 quarterly loss has narrowed to -RMB 137 million), so reported losses or rebounds alone should not be the basis for buy/sell decisions — watch adjusted profit and orders; second, although the controlling shareholder's penalty has concluded, his pledge (Cao Xiaochun: 18.50 million shares) and history of share reductions are the counter-variable to the buyback floor signal — buyback progress and insider shareholding changes must be checked monthly.
